Snowmobile Ordinance Summary

EGF 7.02

  • It is unlawful to operate on private property without the permission of the property owner.
  • It is unlawful to operate within city limits between the hours of 10 pm and 8 am except for the purpose of going to or returning from an evening ride, or for an emergency.
  • It is unlawful to operate on a side walk or berm, except that a direct crossing of a side walk or berm can be made for the purpose of crossing a city street.
  • It is unlawful to operate on a city street:
    • Faster than 15 MPH
    • Other than single file 
    • Other than at the extreme right hand side of the road
  • It is unlawful to operate on publicly-owned land including schools, parks, playgrounds and recreation areas where notice has been posted prohibited their use and cemeteries whether posted or not.
  • It is unlawful to operate within 100 feet of a church, school building, skating rink, sliding area, nursing home or other property where operation would conflict with normal use or endanger persons or property.
  • Operation on city roadways is permitted only as follows: 
    • From the owner’s residence directly to an area the snowmobile can be legally operated. 
    • In an emergency when weather or road conditions make operating a motor vehicle impractical.
  • All other Minnesota Statutes regarding the legal use of snowmobiles apply as well.
